There is some great DS riding here in NW Florida.  The area is the EGLIN AFB reservation.  Hundreds of miles of dirt roads, jeep trails and some single track.  All you need is a reservation permit and a street legal motorcycle.  The permit can be had for a small fee at the "Jackson Guard" station on hiway 85 south in Niceville, Florida.
Good luck,
Terry Brown

We were riding those trails in the late 70's. My brother and I rented this trailer in Mary Esther just outside of Fort Walton Beach. My Mother-in-law lives in Niceville near the bridge.
You could spend all day riding there. Awesome trails.

Terry,

Sounds great. How 'bout some more info.

Can you order the permit online?
Are there any hotels near-by?
What is the dirt like?
Rangers? Hunters? MP's? Motorcycle friendly?
Are there any restrictions other than permit/tag?

Inquiring minds want to know.

The phone number for Jackson Guard is 850-882-4164, 850-882-4164, 850-882-4165, address is EGLIN NATURAL RESOURCES, 107 HIGHWAY 85 NORTH, NICEVILLE, FL. 32578. Ask them for a map.  I don't know if you can purchase permits by mail.  There are many motels close by located in Niceville, Fl. 32578.  The reservation is full of hunters now, so best bet to wait till hunting season is over to start riding.

Looks like there is a break in hunting season this weekend, so me and my crew hope to get a 50 or 60 mile run in.  The sand here runs between sugar white sand to red clay.  After the rain the riding here is very good.  There are a few pretty good single track trails too but finding them is sometimes a real challenge.  Back in the early 70's we used to put on 100 mile enduros on the reservation.  I was fortunate enough to be a team member of Honda of Ft. Walton Beach enduro team.  The Eglin AFB commander shut down the off road competition back then due to some tag a longs getting hurt and trying to sue the government.  Some things never change!!  Hope to see you at Devils Creek.

Elgin brings back memories of survival class in the U.S. NAVY. All of the graduates of AOCS (officer and a gentleman) headed to Elgin to live off the land for a week. It's where we learned to eat rattlesnakes, water moccasins, worms, cactus, blueberries, minnows, turtles, and some root that could be found a foot deep buried in the sand. Those are the items that I remember eating as I was in charge of food procurement for he stay.
