So over the last coupla years I made more excuses than just about anyone on why I could not ride instead of why I will ride, it took a significant cardiac incident to wake my sorry butt up and get with the program. Yes it was now time. and what better way to return than to return to the state I love, Alabamy!

A few posts on the DDS Facebook Group  and viola a usual cast of Smartass characters was assembled for yet another weekend....

Plans were made. Chris Harbig said he was up to ridin and not truckin so WTH, I start packin the 690R for touring!
[20150611_181713-M]

Bright and early, even before daylight was burning, time to head out!
[20150612_055759-M]

And come to think of it I didn't snap any other pictures before me and Chris hit Sasser GA for gas. Cash only, pay AFTER you pump, get you some boiled peanuts. Good old fashioned 'Murica. The way it should be.
[20150612_113443-M]

One thing I've found out about Chris is that he is deeper into learning about history than I am, I I can dig pretty deep. So I sold him on about 6-7 options we could do on the way up. He chose one of my favorites.... the Civil War Navy Museum in Port Columbus, GA. How could you not. They have a REAL Ironclad on display!
[20150612_130902-M]

This thing was recovered from the bottom of the Chattahoochee River. It is simply huge, and the technology for the time was incredible.
[20150612_130542-M]

What drives an Ironclad you may ask.... just a pair of propellers...
[20150612_131442-M]

[20150612_131154-M]

The wall of flags. These flags were flown over forts or on ships during the war...
[20150612_133412-M]

Just a full scale model of an evening on the river, step on board...
[20150612_134017-M]

From here we hauled. It's a nine hour ride after all and we had somewhere we wanted to be! Well I did. Seems every time I visited before I always went through town, bike strapped up in the back. This time I was riding, like I wanted too for years because I needed to get a picture. A picture that was  eluding me for years... but not today... today I was ready for it....
[20150612_143420-XL]

Only thing better woulda been if I had my '72 SixDays with me!

[20150612_142505-M]

Small town Alabama. The South. It just feels sooo good!

Of all things..... Stubb pulls up right next to us in his van at the Penton sign. Who'da thunk we'd be that close in schedule!

But for the next eternity we followed this slow old guy pulling a trailer up into the mountains... geeez... but we get there, finally!

And then who shows up..... only the DDS Man-On-The-Street Reporter Doug "All About Da Base" Durrence! and his trusty sidekick, Rick...
[11108263_1072952572733289_5582220621704326035_n-M]

Stubb checks us in and viola.... home for the next few nights...
[11228043_1072948286067051_6497146711588731679_n-M]

Let the riding begin!

Having someone else lead while I got my eyes dialed in after the surgury was nice. This was my first dirt ride this year![banginghead]
Mountain dirt roads and rocks. Weather was great! Steak dinner Sat night with friends and family[beer], just doesn't get any better. Tooly, you're just going to have to join us someday.
There were lots of pictures taken. Not by me but they're coming, trust me.[thewave]
  To be continued:[lurker]

[banginghead] You're right Stubb, I gotta get up there on the D/S bike. We rode the street bikes up there last year and it was definitely a nice area........even had some pretty good twisties that the Tiger loved. I hear there was even some sorta Chinese D/S bike there this year [dirtbike] that ran on premixed Teriyaki sauce. I bet it really smelled sweet. [augie] Plus I know that the steaks prepared by Chef Stubb are always top notch, really hate that I missed those. [eat] Keep me in mind next time, hopefully things will work out better for me.

So things were really buzzing at the top of the mountain. Bumble Bees were in full swing...
[20150615_060241-M]

But back to the ride...

Saturday had us riding the Northern Loop. Hadn't been this way since '08 so it'll be interesting to see what's changed!

Here's the first "catch your breath stop" we took while waitin for the ChinaBike. It had streety tires on it and going through some of those 'Bama Mud Patchs musta been puckerin' ol' Rick...

The 690 was spakled with some nice 'Bammy clay. It's been far too long....
[20150613_094953-M]

I tell ya.... it was difficult staying off the throttle. The guys were saying something about "hang time" of gravel behind me. I have no clue as to what they were talking about....I can't ride fast... I have a heart condition!

[20150613_095022-M]

Next stop was the old steel bridge.... which happened to be on a dirt road... bummer huh?

There's nothing like a 690R and a muddy Alabama River....
[20150613_101906-M]

I told the guys this is where Billy Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahachee Bridge but they had no clue as to what I was sayin....
[20150613_102049-M]

Ya know, muddy southern creeks... are so... southern...
[20150613_102137-M]

Feels like home, Alabama does....
[20150613_102121-M]

Couple of interesting things on the far side of the bridge.... first off... seems someone knows all about turtle love...
  [20150613_102715-M]

... and secondly.... if you ever wondered where Stubb got those steaks for Saturday night....

More to come....

Soooooo anyway day two: Swampy was out with a bad front wheel bearing which couldn't be found in the immediate area.[aaarg] In offered my 500 XCW for him to ride whilst I visited with family but he refused. My Grandson borrowed Beckys XT225 and once more rode the wheels off it. Boy is good lemme say! We rode the rougher of the two days up to about the 70 mile point and decided to attempt to find our way back to Mt Cheaha State Park. Ended up on pavement back with about 120 miles total for the day.[biker]
Chris, our parametic, has a great idea which needs passing along. He has an idea for an information tube attached to your jacket, chest protector or other garmet that contains all of the individuals physical info in case you are injured. Placed on the person inside a plastic tube with a small zip tie it has the name, age, emergency contact, medications etc. and other important data available immediatly so that no time is lost during medical treatment. It sounds great to me and I'm surprised no one has done this already! [perfect10]
Monday morning everyone said their goodbyes to the beautiful Bama mountains and headed back to Flatistan. Swampys bike in tow behind my van back to Valdosta where he picked up a Triumph Tiger to finish out his trip. Chris took his time getting back picking every interesting sight he could find.
Great trip! I wish we'd had another week up there.[flowers]
