It was Fathers Day and my wife asked what I would like to do. Ride!
I saw this place in a TN magazine. The location is the southern end of Carter County, we live in the northern end of the county. In other words, it's very close and I never new it existed. The article was about a trout barrier they had built to keep the Rainbow Trout out of a native Brook Trout stream. The original was a tile with some logs and due to some flooding, it failed. So they made a nifty little waterfall.
Was disappointed on first arrival because it was a small parking area and a hiking only trail. I noticed a gate on the end with a road and checked it out, it said: "If this gate was closed, please re close it." Sounded inviting to me so we opened, entered and re closed it. A man came out from the yard next door and we just rode to him. To make a long story short, after shooting the bull with him for about an hour, he said we could go on up but leave the gates the way we found them. We weren't actually supposed to be in there.

After we headed on up a ways, we arrived at the 2nd gate. I was blown away by the mountain view as my wife opened and shut the gate for us.

This trail goes over those mountains into North Carolina somewhere around the Elk Park area I'd imagine.

This is looking back down.

The trout barrier.

He had sent his wife up to check on us as we kind of over stayed our welcome and to make sure the gates were all closed back.

I saw that as one of those opportunities of a lifetime. It was so beautiful up there. We rode up about 4 or 5 miles until the trail went into the woods and got steeper. We really didn't have permission to just disappear over the mountain and we were two up anyway.
If you are a history buff, look up the Overmountain Victory Trail online sometime.
It's another one of the many reasons that we are "The Volunteer State".
