Always fun to see a 150 folks come in on Friday.  Many for the first time, and not knowing anyone.  After a day of hard riding I walk through the campground, and as I pass by one campsite after another, all I hear is laughter, and stories about what happened to them out there that day.  Once again many lasting friendships were made at Devil's Creek 2014.

My wife has always wondered what went on in the forest when I was there. Coming home caked in mud, scraped up, worn out.

Now she knows by watching you guys come thru.

She has that "I aint believing this  Sh&t"  Look!

More fun than hanging out at the boat ramp on the Homosassa River!

Two weeks prior to the event, we received news on the passing of our friend and DDS stalwart Rich Bumar. Rich's contributions to DDS and dual sporting span 15 years, many hours, and provided much needed insight to riders as to how sound is measured and what it all means. He and his band even played at Devil's Creek a few years ago. His smile, laughter and sense of humor will be missed.

We rode many times in Florida, and in the mountains of North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. Many stories, many miles, many people.

You are already missed, and I am lucky to have called you my friend.

Devil's Creek 2015 Layout

No better place to start than the beginning..... let's get it on with some pictures from the layout!

We started this in mid-January only to find that the original route was not passable and had a mission to just fine what we could get through in the swamp....

Here's Brian coming around a puddle go-around.... some of ya'll may remember that one dumped into a soggy muddy abyss on Saturday afternoon!
[20150207_102504-M]

Nice days for layout...
[20150207_114306-L]

Here Bert poses as we do some upland routing....
[20150208_122042-L]

Mike Riddle and that 250XCW went everywhere the 4t's went... we actually had to cut this section out as each week it rained and the water level kept creeping higher and higher... bummer.... it was a nice section!
[20150207_120650-M]

Along the way, Dan trims some face slappers...
[20150207_115321-M]

Looks can be deceiving but this hole is rock solid at the bottom... unlike the muddy mess that preceded it! You DS guys ran this on Saturday afternoon and we took it out Sunday....
[20150207_114400-L]

More layout coming up!

Layout Pics Continued...

So we had to throw out what we wanted and take what the swamp would give us!

That being said it was hoped that we could salvage the GatorHole, Snakebite, and Powerline sections..all we could not use...

Here's a picture of Bill Whalen with what looks like a big belly...
[13783_421886704635229_5916583207735700719_n-M]

Just a wee little hole of grey gatorsnot in the Snakebite section....
[1488640_418535054970394_8822864577079070134_n-M]

Early on you passed this spot on Saturday. Ribboned off a whole lot of cypress knees in this little triangle!
[1545678_427745264049373_479574272380285651_n-M]

We were determined to put the PowerLine section in as it's a favorite in it's many forms. Unfortunetly for us, the water was high, and we could not even GET TO let alone use, the powerline sections! So it was cut out for the first time in 19 years!
[10346362_415402701950296_755364424843278672_n-M]

This was part of the sweet GatorHole section, but there was no way we could get 20 bikes through here let alone 150! So out goes the GatorHole Section...
[10689865_415403318616901_6239585606612001405_n-M]

Here's Mike Riddle again going THE ONLY WAY we could around a hole in the SnakeBite section... Damn... that's gotta get cut out too!
[10959345_418534118303821_3248378521141378746_n-M]

High and dry! Ya'll did this on Saturday morning!
[10930076_10203839222089471_6405936682565803532_n-M]

Yeah, pre-riding is all fun and games.... like cutting trees and trimming face slappers....
[10953186_412527258904507_7951903242021222153_n-M]

You guys went to the right on this hole both mornings! Pre-rider Brian got stuck on the go around Sunday morning!
[10981661_421884651302101_2158943245815058093_n-M]

Ah.... my favorite part of the GatorHole... alas... it was not meant to be....
[10801656_10203660710146784_7417554206614473785_n-L]

Yeah... we walked through each and every water hole you guys rode through and around. This is what we do to make sure you guys can get through!
[10941213_412526725571227_8215324339919198784_n-M]

Another part of the GatorHole we couldn't use... past this was nothing but flooded woods...
[10959385_415403098616923_6019456214969139432_n-M]

Yeah. This hurt. We tried to stuff as many pieces of wood into this dang hole in the road. it was about a foot and a half deep round hole that sucked the front tire in and almost sent me head over arse!
[11016833_427745994049300_2270659710755695235_n-M]

When all is said and done, riding layout is the best part of the event. We get to ride, handle problems, create solutions, and before you know it, a working route comes together. Steve Dunn is still out there somewhere. We didn't have the heart to wake the poor sleep soul up!
[11046772_427745484049351_868565094216917973_n-M]

All in all, layout is a grueling and time consuming process. We don't have the luxury of nice long hard packed gravel roads like in Georgia, North carolina, Virginia etc. Every day brings something different in the swamp. A day of rain makes a difference and changes the whole scheme and make up. It rained one or two days each week. Water was draining from the high ground into the low ground, which kept filling the water holes. Sections had to be deleted. Re-routes and go-arounds had to be conceived.

And any changes had to be submitted to the Forest Service for approval. This is why route sheets and gps tracks are a last minute deal at Devil's Creek.

Luckily it didn't rain for us the final 10 days leading up to the event, which allowed the water to go down about 2 inches... that's the difference between keeping sections in, and taking them out.

Props out to the Layout Riders: Brian Pratt, Dave Hall, Mike Riddle, Bob Ryan, Brian Krause, Steve Dunn, Bill Whalen, Bert Barnes, Mike Driver and Dan Fisher. Without these guys, it never would have happened!

Now.... on to the event!

Thursday: We set up tables in the pavillion.

Friday Let's get the show on the road!

Mike Driver found himself a two-stroke play machine and spent hours blowing the leaves around the pavilion.... I mean.... out of... the pavilion...

Since I had been sentenced to road crossing / rake duty, I couldn't get to any of the super spots to grab photos but I did snap a few at the mud hole closest to the assigned crossing spot.  If anybody thinks they look super cool and might want a larger (original sized) copy I'll post the folder info for photobucket where the are stored.

Its always fun watching the thought process of each rider as they round a corner and see:
A: a seemingly innocent mud hole
B: a person (or people) with a camera
